Atlanta Campaign 1864

With 110,000 Union troops under William T. Sherman arrayed against him, General Joseph E. Johnston concentrated his 60,000-man army into fish-hook-shaped line on the hills north of the town of Resaca.  For two days, Sherman hurled his troops against fortified positions, resulting in a bloody stalemate that foreshadowed the rest of the 1864 Atlanta Campaign that followed.

The Civil War Trust has a tremendous opportunity to save 538 acres at Resaca and Dallas, two crucial engagements of the Atlanta Campaign.  This land represents not only a major preservation achievement in the state of Georgia, but it is also a milestone for the Trust as an organization: with this acquisition, we will have saved over 30,000 acres of hallowed ground. Battle of Dallas

The Gazebo at Dallas Trailhead Spur is a beautiful location for a wedding.  The seasonal plantings, fountain and gazebo provide a lovely background with little or no added decorating.

The Gazebo is available for bookings seven days a week, and is available between the hours of 10:00am and 7:00pm only. Weddings are booked on a first come, first served basis. Your wedding will be placed on our calendar when your application is completed and the fee has been paid.

The Orphan Brigade at Dallas Marker
 
Inscription. May 28, 1864. On ridge W., were the intrenched lines of the 1st div., 15th A.C. & the 2d div., 16th A.C. [US]; beyond ravine E., the lines of Bates div. of Hardee's corps [CS].

Late afternoon, Lewis' Ky. (Orphan) & Finley's Florida brigades, [CS] made a desperate assault across the ravine & scaled the high ground W. - the Orphans in the advance - their losses, 51 per cent because of failure to receive orders to withdraw.

This futile attempt by the Ky. Orphans is one of the notable instances of heroism & disaster in the Atlanta Campaign.

Location. 33° 55.208′ N, 84° 49.765′ W. Marker is in Dallas, Georgia, in Paulding County. Marker is on Merchants Drive (Georgia Route 6) 0.1 miles west of Hampton Drive, on the right when traveling west. Click for map.  

The marker is in front of the U.S. Post Office. Merchants Drive (GA Highway 6) is the old US Highway 278 through the center of Dallas. Marker is at or near this postal address: 280 Merchants Drive, Dallas GA 30132, United States of America.

Historical Markers will also be placed in Sara Babb Park and in the Civil War Memorial Trailhead Park.
